AI model shows promise for interpreting follow-up chest x-rays
A group in Seoul, South Korea, has developed an AI model that could help reduce radiology workflows by identifying “no changes” in follow-up chest x‑rays.
October 24, 2023
Example of triage of no change in a pair of chest radiographs in the emergency department. (A) Baseline posteroanterior chest radiograph in a 63-year-old female patient shows a small amount of left (L) pleural effusion and partial atelectasis of the right middle lobe. (B) Follow-up posteroanterior chest radiograph obtained in the same patient 1 day later shows no significant change. (C) Gradient-weighted class activation map shows the algorithm determined no change in the image pair, without relevant highlighting, as the highlighted area is located over the gastroesophageal junction. Hypometabolism detected with F-18 FDG-PET in long-COVID patients: putative astrocyte dysfunction and glutamatergic dysregulation. (A) PET scan of a healthy subject. (B) PET scan of a long COVID patient. Hypometabolic areas are indicated with arrows. (C) A diagram showing a healthy condition in which an astrocyte has a normal capacity to take up glutamate and recycle it to sustain glutamatergic neurotransmission, giving rise to normal glucose utilization and lactate production to ensure adequate neuronal energy supply. (D) A diagram showing a long COVID condition in which an astrocyte has reduced glutamate uptake capacity, leading to reduced glutamate recycling, lower glucose utilization (observed with F-18 FDG-PET as hypometabolism) and lower lactate production, dysregulating glutamatergic neurotransmission, and possibly endangering neuronal survival.

CT reveals changes in lung holes in emphysema patients
By Will Morton
CT imaging of lung holes could offer a new way to visualize and quantify the natural course of emphysema.

Emphysema progression with hole changes, with holes colored according to their diameter in 2-mm increments. (A) Baseline inspiratory nonenhanced axial CT scans in a 48-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease show emphysema holes with hyperexpansion of secondary pulmonary lobules (white arrows) and thin alveolar walls visible in the right upper lobe. This emphysematous lesion is filled with holes of varying sizes. A single large air cyst was observed in the left upper lobe (black arrows), classified as a single emphysema hole of 20 mm or greater (bright green). (B) At six-year follow-up inspiratory nonenhanced axial CT, the holes in the right upper lobe have merged (white arrows), with no visible alveolar septa remaining, resulting in the formation of a large new hole of 20 mm or greater (bright green). Meanwhile, the hole in the left upper lobe also enlarged, merging with adjacent holes (black arrows). The size of other holes in the paramedian left upper lobe decreased.
