ECRI reports on multislice CT scanners

Consulting group ECRI has released the results of tests conducted on four multislice CT scanners in the May issue of Health Devices. The scanners, from GE Medical Systems, Philips Medical Systems North America, Siemens Medical Solutions, and Toshiba America Medical Systems, can acquire four slices in a single rotation.

The testing examined whether the scanners can provide images of the same diagnostic quality as single-slice CT without increasing radiation dose, while significantly increasing the data-acquisition speed and range of clinical applications.

In addition, the evaluation discusses why it’s important for a multislice scanner to have automated dose control function. The study also provides advice on deciding whether and at what point to acquire a multislice scanner.

The report can be ordered at the ECRI's Web site. ECRI is based in Plymouth Meeting, PA.
