Breast MR falls short for microcalcifications, but CAD helps in malignancies

Two new studies further examine the use of MRI for breast imaging. Researchers with the Italian Trial for Breast MRI of Microcalcifications tested dynamic MRI for evaluating microcalcifications that were deemed suspicious on mammography. Meanwhile, U.S. investigators compared the accuracy of breast MRI interpretation with and without a CAD system.

On Friday at the Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (CARS) meeting, researchers from Japan discussed the development and testing of a computer-aided detection (CAD) scheme to help automate the diagnosis of emphysema with CT.

Breast CAD takes aim at architectural distortion

OSAKA - Researchers from Japan and Canada discussed their prototype CAD systems for detecting and evaluating architectural distortions on mammograms at the Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (CARS) meeting on Thursday. Their success was dimmed by a relatively high rate of false positives, but the groups also found some cancers that mass-based systems overlooked.
