Philips Medical Systems of Andover, MA, will showcase new technologies the company has introduced as part of its Vision 2007 and Performance 2007 ultrasound upgrades, as well as quantification software enhancements.

The Vision 2007 enhancements are available for two flagship scanners in Philips' product line, including the iU22 radiology and iE33 echocardiography systems, while Performance 2007 upgrades can be purchased for the HD11 XE, EnVisor, and HD3 systems.

One Vision 2007 feature for iU22 is iSlice, a volumetric display mode that provides an enhanced review of volumetric data obtained from freehand sweeps, mechanical sweeps, and xMatrix electronic volume acquisitions. The technique features precision progressive views of anatomy; customized, protocol-driven exams to reduce scanning times; and new imaging enhancements and tools for interventional procedures, including radiofrequency ablation, according to the company.

A number of new transducers are available as part of the Vision 2007 package, including the L15-7io compact high-frequency transducer for musculoskeletal exams and intraoperative vascular procedures; the D2tcd transducer and transcranial Doppler enhancements to visual the adult cranial vasculature; and the ergonomic V6-2 automated transducer that allows for 2D and 3D imaging with one transducer and volumetric imaging for almost all ob/gyn and abdominal exams.

Other new Vision 2007 enhancements for the iU22 system include spatiotemporal image correlation (STIC), a new capability for evaluating fetal hearts and detecting abnormalities during routine obstetrical exams. New quantification capabilities are also included, such as on-cart access to QLAB cardiac 2DQ software for analysis of left ventricular volumes and ejection fractions.

Vision 2007 also includes upgrades for the company's iE33 echocardiography system, such as the new X7-2 transducer, a pediatric cardiology probe that combines xMatrix technology with PureWave crystal technology into a more compact size. Philips said the probe is the first real-time 3D transducer optimized for pediatric echo examinations.

In Performance 2007 upgrades, the HD11 XE ultrasound system features a technology called Invert imaging, a volume display method that allows the direct visualization of anechoic structures, such as the chambers and major vessels of a fetal heart. Color Invert enables users to visualize directional blood flow within the inverted volume. iSlice and Thick Slice display are also available on HD11 XE.

Performance 2007 enhancements for the HD3 ultrasound system include a larger 12.1-inch monitor, an optional transducer adapter to add as many as three transducers to the scanner at one time, and a new C9-4 transducer for vascular and neonatal cephalic applications.

The EnVisor ultrasound system -- Philips best-selling ultrasound device -- is receiving a new C6-3 transducer that provides enhanced intercostal access. An anatomical M-mode capability enables EnVisor users to keep the M-mode line perpendicular to the anatomy, even in abnormally shaped or positioned hearts, and allows accurate measurements of chambers, walls, and ejection fractions.
