Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems has installed three of its Halcyon radiotherapy systems in Africa and five Varian Edge Radiosurgery systems in the U.S.

The Halcyon system joins a Varian Clinac iX radiotherapy system already installed at the Centre National d'Oncologie in Nouakchott, Mauritania, and will provide intensity-modulated radiotherapy and volumetric modulated arc therapy to patients.

The Halcyon installation at Centre Hospitalier Nganda in Kinshasa, Congo, replaces an older radiotherapy system and is the only radiotherapy unit in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to Varian.

At the Lagos Teaching University Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, the installation is a part of a three-linear accelerator project and replaces a less advanced system at the center.

In other Varian news, 21st Century Oncology purchased five Varian Edge Radiosurgery systems. Three machines are in use in Sarasota, Cape Coral, and Wellington, FL. A center in Dothan, AL, is expected to carry the machine by end of year, and another in Bradenton, FL will be live by the end of January 2020.
