Bruce Power has begun manufacturing medical grade cobalt-60 for processing by radioisotope firm Nordion, according to a March 26 report in World Nuclear News.
Cobalt-60 is used in the delivery of high doses of radiation to cancerous tumors with limited damage to surrounding issues. Therapy with cobalt-60 can provide an alternative to traditional brain surgery and radiation therapy for treating complex brain conditions, the article noted.
Cobalt-60 is produced at Bruce Power's nuclear generation station on the shores of Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada. The next step is for Nordion to process the material.
