New Zealand medical technology company Wellumio has raised $9.75 million in a pre-Series A funding round to advance clinical, regulatory, and commercial milestones for its portable stroke imaging device, Axana.

Axana is a portable, battery-powered brain imaging device that delivers MRI-based stroke assessment at the point of care, weighing 50 kg and requiring no contrast agents, cryogenics, or shielded rooms, according to the company. Its proprietary pulsed gradient-free mapping (PGFM) technology received a U.S. patent in December 2025 and has shown agreement with conventional MRI across key stroke biomarkers in preclinical studies and first-in-human feasibility trials, Wellumio said.

New investors included Bioshore Ventures, an Australian medtech investor, and Jumpspace Ventures, a U.S. neurotechnology venture capital firm, the company noted.
