The American College of Nuclear Physicians and the Society of Nuclear Medicine have finalized a partnership deal under which the SNM will take over the ACNP's administrative functions.
The societies will remain independent under the arrangement, with the ACNP concentrating on advocacy and government affairs issues, while the SNM focuses on educational and research activities. SNM officers, led by SNM executive director William Bertera, will oversee the administrative functions of both groups.
The partnership is the culmination of discussions that began last year, when the ACNP implemented a reorganization plan in an effort to cut costs. The ACNP sought an alliance with the SNM as one of several remedies designed to help the organization recover from several years of cash-flow problems.
The ACNP recently laid off its support staff, and canceled its annual meeting scheduled for the first week of February in Miami. The SNM has been handling the ACNP's administrative functions since the college's staff was let go.
The SNM will permanently assume responsibility for the ACNP's management services functions, such as the maintenance of member records and bookkeeping, according to Virginia Pappas, deputy executive director of the SNM. Pappas is now also deputy executive director of the ACNP. The transition should be a smooth one, as the SNM staffers are already familiar with nuclear medicine.
The societies will definitely remain independent, according to Pappas, with each focusing on its particular area of expertise.
"The intent has never been for (the ACNP) to become part of the SNM," Pappas said. "They were always going to be a separate organization."
