Tumor ablation therapy developer Thermedical has received a $3 million grant from the National Cancer Institute.
The Somerville, MA-based firm said the three-year grant will fund continued development and testing of its saline enhanced radiofrequency ablation (SERF) system, which is designed for use in ablation of malignant tumors. The technology utilizes radiofrequency (RF) energy to overheat and kill tumor tissue.
The proceeds from the grant will initially be used to apply for U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance for ablation of solid tissue in 2007, with a multi-institutional clinical trial for ablation of liver cancer to follow, the company said.
