Presence of osteoarthritis influences bone bruise prognosis
By
Shalmali Pal
Bone bruises are thought to result from microfractures of the medullar trabeculae. They are often radiographically occult and hidden on arthroscopy. In a new paper in the September issue of
American Journal of Roentgenology
, Dutch radiologists looked at whether the natural course of bone bruises, as seen on MRI, had any prognostic value.

MR parameters divulge depth of acute hamstring injuries
By
Shalmali Pal
Professional athletes and dancers are as familiar with hamstring strains as they are with the bench press and barre, respectively. Two studies affirmed MR's major role in defining these injuries. Australian and British researchers used the modality on football players for reinjury risk stratification, while Swedish sports medicine specialists looked at hamstring strains in dancers during slow-speed stretching. While the MR results didn't hold all the answers, the imaging exam was still worth performing, according to the experts.
