Missed lesions offer lessons in VC
By
Eric Barnes
Even when an experience is less than optimal, it can still be a great teacher. In the case of a recent multicenter VC trial that yielded disappointing results, radiologists took the time to learn where, how, and why lesions were missed.

Studies serve food for thought on cancer link to meat, fruits, and veggies
By
Shalmali Pal
There's disappointing news for both high-protein diet devotees and vigilant vegans. According to the latest research on the food-cancer link, tearing into red meat regularly raises the risk for colorectal cancer, but eating bushels of fruits and vegetables may not offer protection against breast cancer.

Detecting analgesic nephropathy a pain on CT
By
Eric Barnes
The recent news about problems associated with painkillers based on COX-2 inhibitors has left many patients scrambling for over-the-counter analgesics. But analgesic overuse can lead to nephropathy and end-stage renal disease, and unfortunately, a new study finds that noncontrast CT may be a poor method of detecting the effects of overuse.

VC CAD system finds polyps in opacified fluid
By
Eric Barnes
Researchers from the National Institutes of Health have tweaked their colon CAD algorithm to detect polyps submerged, or partly submerged, in opacified fluid. The study represents another key step in the rapid evolution of colon CAD, paving the way for automated polyp detection with the use of oral contrast agents.

Early arterial phase best for HCC detection
By
Eric Barnes
Early arterial-phase imaging may be optimal for detecting hepatocellular carcinoma with CT, but once the lesion is found you'll want to add a few seconds' delay to assess tumor hemodynamics, according to a presentation at the RSNA meeting in Chicago earlier this month.

Low-prep VC study finds CAD can be fooled
By
Eric Barnes
Computer-aided detection found most of the polyps in a reduced-prep virtual colonoscopy protocol, a new study concludes. On the other hand, the technique produced too many false-positives when barium fecal tagging was incomplete, which was often.

Ultrasound turns in middling results in blunt abdominal trauma
By
Shalmali Pal
Ultrasound is credited with rapidly and efficiently spotting free fluid in blunt abdominal trauma cases. But does this hold true in pregnant patients? Yes and no, according to a study from the University of California, Davis. Another study by researchers in Switzerland found that contrast-enhanced sonography came up short in detecting blunt abdominal trauma.

Diagnostic, screening VC comparable in extracolonic disease detection
By
Eric Barnes
CHICAGO - At the RSNA gastrointestinal sessions, Dr. Michael Zalis from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston presented a study that compared the performance of low-dose screening VC with its diagnostic counterpart, including their relative accuracy for the detection of extracolonic pathology.

Automated CO2 insufflation improves VC
By
Eric Barnes
CHICAGO - European researchers took a good long look at automated CO2 insufflation in virtual colonoscopy at the RSNA meeting on Tuesday -- and came away mostly upbeat.
