MR shows broad spectrum of findings in pregnant women with suspected appendicitis
By
Shalmali Pal
Although acute appendicitis is not terribly common in pregnant women, it does pose a diagnostic challenge because of anatomic and histologic changes that occur in these patients. CT carries a radiation risk while ultrasound, which is the established modality in this population, doesn't always deliver the whole story. Instead, Boston-based imagers have found success with MRI for evaluating the appendix, and more, in the gravid patient.

Hessian matrix-based CAD looks promising for VC
By
Eric Barnes
BERLIN - Virtual colonoscopy computer-aided detection (CAD) schemes based on the Hessian matrix method are gaining currency among researchers. At the 2007 Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (CARS) conference, researchers from Japan presented a CAD method that uses filters based on Hessian matrix eigenvalues to eliminate false-positive polyp candidates.

Fully automated VC CAD system solves tagging problems
By
Eric Barnes
Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston have built a computer-aided detection (CAD) scheme that can find polyps in tagged virtual colonoscopy images, without getting bogged down by the oral contrast.

Patient survey suggests preference for minimal-prep VC
By
Eric Barnes
While colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S., less than half of screening age individuals over 50 are examined for the disease. A new survey suggests that eliminating the cathartic bowel preparation might improve compliance screening rates. But the answers may not predict patients' real interest in screening, and the minimal-prep approach is not without complications, cautioned a radiologist experienced in virtual colonoscopy screening.

FAST proves useful as triage tool in wartime
By
Erik L. Ridley
Focused abdominal sonography for trauma (FAST) exams can serve as a valuable triage tool in multiple casualty incidents (MCIs), according to researchers from Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, Israel. The group retrospectively reviewed the records of 849 patients arriving at the level I trauma center during a one-month period during the Second Lebanon War.

Noncathartic bowel prep facilitates, complicates virtual colonoscopy
By
Eric Barnes
SAN FRANCISCO - Studies suggest that virtual colonoscopy without cathartic bowel preparation is feasible and sufficiently accurate. More patients might be willing to get screened. But if prepless VC makes patients' lives easier, it complicates matters for radiologists. Dr. Michael Zalis from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston discussed several issues that impact the emergence of a kinder, gentler screening exam at the International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT.

MRI features of larger lesions predict malignancy in cirrhotic liver
By
Radiology Review
(Radiology Review) MRI T1-weighted hypointense lesions on unenhanced in-phase images and T2-weighted hyperintensity or arterial hypervascularity are highly suggestive of malignancy in patients with liver cirrhosis, according to a study published in the
American Journal of Roentgenology

Significant extracolonic cancer found in VC screening patients
By
Eric Barnes
Unsuspected extracolonic cancers are found in about one in 300 asymptomatic virtual colonoscopy (VC) screening subjects, according to a new study of more than 5,000 individuals who underwent colon cancer screening. The results add weight to the argument that following up the most serious extracolonic findings can potentially benefit outcomes.
