PET/CT moves to prime time as first-line tool for lung cancer diagnosis

VIENNA - A study unveiled by researchers from Spain at this week's European Congress of Radiology (ECR) suggests that the current imbroglio swirling around CT screening may be only Sturm und Drang, at least when compared to the use of integrated PET/CT for lung cancer diagnosis. PET/CT has several advantages over PET and CT for diagnosing lung cancer, according to the group.

Italung-CT results show efficacy of lung cancer screening

VIENNA - The first results of a sizeable Italian multicenter screening trial suggest once again that CT screening of smokers is effective in finding lung cancer in time to cure it. Presented at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR), the results are among the first of several randomized trials undertaken to assess the efficacy of CT lung cancer screening.

Penn researchers utilize new lung MR techniques

Radiologists are principal source of variability in nodule localization

A number of lung cancer screening studies have examined the variability of reported nodule sizes, but variability in the localization of nodules in 3D space has been somewhat overlooked. Now a new study from the Lung Imaging Database Consortium (LIDC) finds that nodule placement in the 3D space is highly variable, and that the variation depends more on the radiologist than the drawing method used to determine its spatial location.

Triple-rule-out CT yields even contrast enhancement

Researchers in Florida have developed a triphasic multidetector-row CT (MDCT) method for ruling out the three most dangerous causes of chest pain. Their 64-slice CT protocol examines the coronary arteries, pulmonary arteries, and the aortic arch in a single pass, generating even contrast enhancement in all three regions.

CT distinguishes asbestos lung damage from smoking impairment

A new study finds that CT can apportion the blame for lung function impairment between patients' asbestos exposure and their smoking-related emphysema. The preliminary results will require further validation, but the authors believe the results are clear enough to have medicolegal implications, inasmuch as doctors have traditionally found it difficult until now to differentiate between the two common causes of lung impairment.
