Canadian CT lung screening tracks asbestos workers
By
Eric Barnes
As the debate swirls in the U.S. over CT lung screening of smokers, Canadian researchers are developing a unique CT screening program designed to focus on patients who have been exposed to asbestos as a tool for early detection of malignant mesothelioma. The investigators aim to help patients while advancing the understanding of mesothelioma, especially early-stage disease, which is poorly understood.

Criteria determine CAD mark sensitivity
By
Cynthia E. Keen
The sensitivity of computer-aided detection (CAD) algorithms will change depending upon the criteria used to evaluate the precise location of a mark on a suspicious finding. Thus, marking criteria should be specifically defined, both by CAD product vendors and authors reporting study results, according to researchers from the University of Chicago.

CAD provides mixed benefits for DR lung exams
By
Brian Casey
VIENNA - A pair of presentations on Saturday at the 2008 European Congress of Radiology on computer-aided detection (CAD) for digital radiography (DR) reported mixed benefits for the software in detecting lung nodules in thoracic exams. The presenters discussed their experiences with a commercially available CAD product and its impact on radiologist performance in analyzing DR lung studies.

CAD vendors hope FDA hearings will clear approval bottleneck
By
Cynthia E. Keen
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today began a two-day set of hearings that could result in major changes to the way the agency regulates computer-aided detection (CAD) technology. Industry experts are hoping the hearings will clear up a logjam of delayed regulatory applications for CAD software that has been building since last year.

Lung nodule segmentation method shows potential
By
Erik L. Ridley
A new method for segmenting lung nodules in 3D CT images shows promise for improving the quantification, detection, and diagnosis of nodules, according to researchers from the University of Chicago in Illinois. They sought to develop a reliable method of segmenting lung nodules in 3D images using a "spiral scanning" technique.

CAD shines in detecting large nonsolid pulmonary nodules
By
Cynthia E. Keen
Computer-aided detection (CAD) software can outperform both a senior thoracic radiologist and a resident trained in chest imaging for detecting nonsolid pulmonary nodules larger than 3 mm, according to a study from France. The results support the use of a CAD system as a second observer for both nonsolid and solid nodules detected on CT studies, the researchers said.

Pediatric CT dose drops with breast shields plus tube modulation
By
Eric Barnes
Considering the heightened sensitivity of young patients to radiation's ill effects, and the approximately 7 million CT scans of U.S. children annually, radiologists are working overtime to minimize the dose for these patients. Researchers from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, have recently found that the radiation dose of pediatric thoracic CT scans can be cut by more than half using breast shields with dose modulation software.

Study reinforces V/Q, PIOPED II guidelines for PE during pregnancy
By
Cynthia E. Keen
The results of an analysis of ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) scans performed over a seven-year period reinforce the recommendations of the Prospective Investigation of Pulmonary Embolism Diagnosis (PIOPED) II trial. The V/Q scan remains an excellent study to make or rule out the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism in pregnant women, according to researchers from Rhode Island.
