Modest mortality gains in CT lung screening model
By
Eric Barnes
CT screening for lung cancer may provide a moderate reduction in lung cancer mortality among smokers, according to a study in the July issue of
Radiology.
The reduction in deaths from all causes due to screening was modest, however, due to competing causes of death among smokers of increasing age.

CAD software finds vertebral fractures in digital chest exams
By
Brian Casey
Most research studies on the use of computer-aided detection (CAD) software for digital x-ray have focused on the detection of lung nodules. But new research indicates that CAD could also be useful for detecting vertebral fractures -- potentially an early sign of osteoporosis.

Crack lung: The acute syndrome hits headlines again
By
Heather Hokenson
The hospitalization of British pop chanteuse Amy Winehouse in June made headlines around the world. While few radiologists are ever likely to see images of the singer's lungs, the condition known as "crack lung" has a distinct presentation on chest CT and radiography images.

Diligence can reduce missed lung cancers in CT
By
Eric Barnes
A new lung cancer model based on 1,520 CT screening subjects found that five years of annual lung cancer screening increased lung cancer detection by an estimated 37% and decreased lung cancer-related deaths by 28%, according to a study in the journal
Radiology
.

ASCO news: PET studies advocated before head and neck, lung cancer surgeries
By
Edward Susman
CHICAGO - Conducting an FDG-PET scan on patients with head and neck or lung cancer can help reduce unnecessary or futile surgical interventions, according to research presented this week at the 2008 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting.

CAD helps residents identify lung nodules on DR
By
Cynthia E. Keen
Computer-aided detection (CAD) software designed to detect lung nodules with chest digital radiography (DR) can help improve the reader performance of radiology residents. Researchers found that using CAD increased the sensitivity of residents by nearly 29 percentage points, while producing fewer than three false positives per image.

Small lung nodules vex dual-energy DR, study says
By
Brian Casey
European researchers found no statistically significant benefit in the use of dual-energy digital radiography (DR) compared with conventional DR for detecting pulmonary nodules. The predominance of small lung nodules in the multicenter study may have exceeded the ability of dual-energy DR to detect them, they wrote.

Ground-glass nodule features on CT reveal malignancy risk
By
Eric Barnes
Researchers are peering through a proverbial glass, darkly, to study the features of ground-glass opacities (GGOs). GGOs are being detected with increasing frequency as more thin-section CT lung scans are performed to check for cancer in smokers and former smokers. Distinguishing benign from malignant GGOs is a hit-or-miss task for CT, one that could potentially improve if researchers are able to find reliable signs of malignancy or benignity, thereby reducing the need for invasive biopsy.

Combining chemo and radiation improves NSCLC outcomes for elderly
By
Barbara Boughton
SAN DIEGO - French researchers have found that combining chemotherapy with radiation treatment is effective and tolerable for elderly patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In a study presented at this week's American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) meeting, the investigators analyzed the efficacy and side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy regimens in patients older than age 65.

Higher CT values associated with malignancy in lung nodules
By
Eric Barnes
Dutch researchers noticed some intriguing results in a recent analysis of data from the ongoing NELSON lung cancer screening trial. They found that malignant nodules, scanned at baseline and follow-up, had higher attenuation overall than benign nodules -- a feature that could potentially aid the management of patients with indeterminate solid pulmonary nodules.
