Hybrid lung segmentation software boosts performance
By
Erik L. Ridley
A lung segmentation algorithm that combines the advantages of standard and more sophisticated approaches yields fast and accurate results, according to researchers from the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands.

DR image processing produces mixed CAD results
By
Brian Casey
Applying certain types of postprocessing techniques to digital radiography (DR) chest images can help increase lung nodule detection when the images are analyzed by computer-aided detection (CAD) software, according to researchers from China. But the performance improvement comes at a price of more false positives.

Experience may make a difference with lung CAD
By
Cynthia E. Keen
Computer-aided detection (CAD) software designed for use with digital chest radiographs can improve the detection of lung nodules by readers with different levels of expertise, according to research from Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem. But results conflict as to whether more experienced readers would benefit the most from CAD.

Radiologists more likely to reject certain true-positive CAD findings
By
Cynthia E. Keen
Small, part-solid, elongated pulmonary nodules detected by computer-aided detection (CAD) software on MDCT chest scans are more likely to be rejected by radiologists than lesions with other characteristics, according to researchers from Stanford University in Stanford, CA.

Multicenter trial supports CTPA versus V/Q for PE
By
Eric Barnes
A study in the December 19
Journal of the American Medical Association
confirms that CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) is a reliable alternative to ventilation-perfusion (V/Q) scans for ruling out pulmonary embolism (PE). CT doesn't miss clinically significant blood clots in the lungs, and can also help reveal other potential causes of the patients' symptoms, the authors report.

CAD offers value in detecting lung nodules with CT
By
Erik L. Ridley
Computer-aided detection (CAD) technology offers a relatively high detection rate for detecting lung nodules on CT scans, according to two studies presented at last month's RSNA 2007 meeting in Chicago. The first analyzed the performance of a CAD scheme for detecting lung nodules of various sizes and patterns on thin-slice CT studies, while the second study looked at CAD's effect on the performance of thoracic radiologists for detecting lung nodules.

PET does not predict survival in advanced lung cancer
By
Eric Barnes
CHICAGO - Studies over the past several years have demonstrated FDG-PET's ability to predict survival in patients with early-stage lung cancer. But for those with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), PET has no prognostic value, according to a new 15-year study from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC.

Low-dose CT yields equivalent value for PE in pregnancy
By
Eric Barnes
CHICAGO - The use of low-dose CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) to rule out suspected pulmonary embolism -- the leading cause of death during pregnancy -- works just as well as a standard-dose protocol, researchers from Boston reported Monday at the 2007 RSNA meeting.
