ADAC announces PET enhancements

Nuclear medicine vendor ADAC Laboratories announced several new developments in the company's PET program at this week's Society of Nuclear Medicine meeting in St. Louis. They include a high-end PET camera that ADAC plans to bring to market some time in 2001.

The Milpitas, CA, vendor introduced a new version of its C-PET system, called C-PET Plus, that features new software algorithms and computer hardware that enable the camera to conduct faster PET studies with better image quality. ADAC believes that the company's order rate for PET cameras will be up four-fold in fiscal 2000 compared with the same period last year.

ADAC also reported that it is working on new PET crystal technology based on gadolinium oxyortho silicate (GSO), a new crystal material. ADAC believes that GSO will enable higher resolution imaging than that possible with the standard bismuth germanate (BGO) or sodium iodide crystals (NaI) now used in PET.

ADAC plans to use GSO crystals in a new high-end PET system to be introduced next year. The new system will be able to detect a broad range of isotopes, including those used in research applications. The new system will provide a good complement to the entry-level C-PET unit, the company believes.
