Pitt names new radiology department chair

Maureen Kohi, MD, has been appointed chair of the department of radiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC, effective October 12.

Kohi joins from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she has served as chair of the department of radiology and system executive medical director of enterprise imaging since 2020. She most recently co-founded the Consortium for Innovative Imaging and Interventions, a multidisciplinary initiative focused on imaging, AI, and image-guided therapies.

Kohi is an interventional radiologist whose research spans translational imaging science, AI-enabled diagnostics, and image-guided treatments with a focus on women's health. She has held leadership roles at the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR), the RSNA, and the American Heart Association, and received the 2025 SIR Women in Interventional Radiology Champion Award.

Kohi succeeds Jules Sumkin, DO, who is stepping down as chair July 31 after leading the department since 2014. Alessandro Furlan, MD, will serve as interim chair beginning August 1.
