ASTRO congratulates Biden on successful radiation treatment

The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) is congratulating President Joe Biden on completing his course of radiation therapy at the University of Pennsylvania’s Radiation Oncology clinic in Philadelphia.

Biden marked the successful completion by ringing a ceremonial bell alongside his radiation oncology care team. He reported a diagnosis of metastasized prostate cancer in May and said he was receiving radiation treatment earlier in October.

ASTRO President Sameer Keole, MD, said it's "inspiring to see such a visible example of hope and progress thanks to the power and precision of radiation therapy."

ASTRO highlighted the benefits of radiation therapy in its statement, including techniques such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image guidance, and shorter-course approaches.

“While every patient’s experience is unique, moments like this symbolize the dedication of cancer care teams everywhere,” Keole said. “On behalf of the radiation oncology community, we extend our best wishes to President Biden for his continued recovery and good health.”
