The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has canceled its annual meeting that had been scheduled to take place April 24-29 in San Diego. The group cited the coronavirus outbreak as the reason for the cancellation.

The move was an evidence-based decision made after reviewing the U.S. government's restrictions on international travel; travel restrictions issued by government agencies, cancer centers, academic institutions, and pharmaceutical and biotech companies; and the advice of infectious disease experts, the AACR said.

"It is clear that all of these elements significantly affect the ability of delegates, speakers, presenters of proffered papers, and exhibitors to participate fully in the annual meeting," the AACR said in a statement.

The annual meeting draws around 24,000 attendees from 80 countries, with more than 500 exhibitors. The AACR said it hoped to reschedule the conference for later in 2020.

More information is available on the AACR's website.
