Reactor shutdown hurts MDS Nordion's Q1

The shutdown last year of the Chalk River nuclear reactor in Canada affected the first-quarter financial results of radioisotope developer MDS Nordion.

The Kanata, Ontario-based company posted $60 million in revenues for the period (end-January 31), down 10% from the $67 million reported in the first quarter of 2007. MDS Nordion attributed the decline to December's medical isotope supply disruption and light cobalt shipments.

Also during the quarter, MDS Nordion signed an agreement with Best Medical International to divest its external beam therapy and self-contained irradiator product lines. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2008.
