Swiss first for Varian's Gated RapidArc

A 51-year-old breast cancer patient from Switzerland has become the first person in the world to be treated using Gated RapidArc from radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, CA.

According to Varian, the treatment took place at the Istituto Oncologico della Svizzera Italiana (IOSI) radiation oncology unit in Bellinzona, Switzerland, a public comprehensive cancer center serving southern Switzerland and part of Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale at San Giovanni Hospital.

Gated RapidArc technology is designed to monitor patient breathing and compensate for tumor motion, while delivering radiation therapy during a continuous rotation around the patient.
