Hologic grows sales, though profit slips

Women's healthcare vendor Hologic of Bedford, MA, reported 4% growth in revenue for the company's third fiscal quarter, although net income fell slightly.

For the quarter (end-June 26), Hologic had sales of $420.7 million, compared with sales of $403.1 million in the same period of fiscal 2009. The company's net income for the period was $27.4 million, compared with net income of $30.8 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2009.

The company said its revenue growth was propelled by an 8% increase in sales in its Breast Health segment, driven by growth in serviced-related revenue related to its Selenia full-field digital mammography (FFDM) systems and growth in its Gyn Surgical revenues. Sales in the company's Diagnostics and Skeletal Health segments declined slightly.

For the year to date, Hologic has produced sales of $1.251 billion, up 1% compared with revenues of $1.234 billion in the first nine months of fiscal 2009. The company posted year-to-date net income of $74.2 million, compared with a net loss of $2.241 billion for the first nine months of 2009, when the company took a $2.34 billion write-off connected to the impairment of goodwill related to its acquisition of diagnostics firm Cytyc.
