Philips Healthcare has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for new applications on its CX50 CompactXtreme portable ultrasound scanner.

Already available for adult cardiology applications, the system can now also be used in radiology, vascular, women's health, emergency medicine, regional anesthesia, and critical care imaging, according to the Andover, MA-based vendor.

Philips will highlight CX50 CompactXtreme at the 2009 RSNA meeting in Chicago.
