Ultrasound market reaches $3 billion in 1999

Total revenues for all ultrasound segments in 1999 reached $3 billion, according to analysis from market research firm Frost & Sullivan. In its latest report, World Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging Equipment Markets, the San Jose, CA, company projects that revenues will top $4 billion by 2006.

With the U.S. market growing at less than 10%, emerging regions such as Eastern Europe, Asia Pacific, and Latin America present prime opportunities for expansion, according to F&S industry analyst Hamsini Muralidharan. The continued development of these regions has heightened health awareness among their populations, driving the need for updated medical diagnostic equipment, he said.

Combining the increasing range of diagnostic ultrasound applications with an established global presence can be key to maximizing profit potential for ultrasound vendors, according to the firm.
