Radiopharmaceutical firm Ion Beam Applications (IBA) unveiled its Proteus Nano system, designed as a smaller alternative to traditional proton therapy centers, at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in Chicago this week.
While the typical proton therapy center requires a footprint as large as 100,000 sq ft, the two-room Proteus Nano system requires much less space and is available at the lowest acquisition cost per room in the industry, according to the Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium-based firm.
Proton therapy employs highly accelerated proton beams to target tumors, with abrupt fall-off of proton energy outside the targeted area, which results in decreased damage to surrounding tissues, IBA explained.
