GE Healthcare has inked a deal to acquire assets of extremity MRI developer ONI Medical Systems for an undisclosed sum.
The deal will allow GE to expand its MRI portfolio with the addition of the Wilmington, MA-based vendor's MSK Extreme 1.0T and MSK Extreme 1.5T dedicated extremity scanners. In announcing the acquisition, GE highlighted the open nature and small footprint of these systems, as well as their promise to help reduce patient backlog when deployed as a complement to a whole-body scanner.
The extremity scanners can also serve as a main system for an orthopedic/sports medicine practice, GE said. ONI has installed 175 of its systems worldwide.
The Chalfont St. Giles, U.K.-based vendor will also acquire ONI's team of engineers and scientists, led by Dr. Peter Roemer. The deal is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter.
