Philips completes first Achieva XR MRI upgrade

Philips Healthcare of Andover, MA, has implemented its new Achieva XR convertible MRI upgrade for the first time at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

The upgrade involves turning off the site's existing Achieva XR 1.5-tesla magnet, replacing the radiofrequency subsystem with a 3-tesla version, and then ramping up the magnet to its new strength. The upgrade does not require room reconfiguration.

The 1.5-tesla scanner had been in operation for about a month before it was upgraded to 3 tesla. The upgrade occurred with no interruption in MetroHealth's MRI service.
