Siemens, MGH developing 128-channel MRI

Siemens Medical Solutions, working in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, said it has developed a prototype 128-channel MRI system based on its proprietary Total imaging matrix (Tim) technology.

The device is built on a Magnetom Trio 3-tesla MRI that has been expanded to 128 independent radiofrequency (RF) channels that are paired with one coil element per channel, according to the Malvern, PA-based firm. Current Tim technology employs 102 coil elements integrated in 32 independent RF channels.

The principles and potential applications of 128-channel MRI are being evaluated at MGH, with initial findings showing a 25-fold increase in speed, the company said. Siemens said the technology has clinical and research applications in cardiology and neurology studies.
