ACR schedules cardiac CT test

The American College of Radiology (ACR) has set a date in September for the first exam in its testing program to qualify physicians with the required skills in cardiac CT.

The Cardiac CT Certificate of Advanced Proficiency (CCT CoAP) will be given quarterly, beginning September 9, at the new ACR education center in Reston, VA.

The four-hour exam will contain a practical, case-based component and a knowledge-based multiple-choice section, the ACR said in a statement. The "practice setting" component allows test takers to conduct actual cardiac CT case assessments, administered on the vendor software chosen by the candidate.

The certificate approach highlights a relatively new direction for the ACR, which once relied solely on board certification, but has increasingly explored new certification opportunities in highly specialized areas of radiology, such as virtual colonoscopy.

The goal is to assist ACR members in documenting their additional training and expertise in these areas, the ACR said. More information about the test is available on the ACR's Web Site.
