Report: NRG looking for new Pallas builder

Dutch radiopharmaceutical producer Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG) may put its proposed 80-megawatt nuclear research reactor back out to bid after reportedly breaking off negotiations with its first choice to build the facility.

According to Korean news outlet Dong-a Ilbo, the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute may bid again on the project now that NRG is no longer negotiating a contract with Invap of Argentina.

The report cites institute director Yang Myeong-seung as saying he received an e-mail from NRG on January 15, informing him that NRG had ceased talks with Invap.

The runner-up for the Pallas reactor was a Korean consortium, which included the institute, Korea Power Engineering, and Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction.

NRG plans to build the reactor to produce molybdenum-99, the precursor to technetium-99, and eventually help alleviate the worldwide shortage of the medical isotope.
