International Isotopes files permit with NRC

Radioisotope manufacturer International Isotopes of Idaho Falls, ID, has submitted a license application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to build a uranium deconversion and fluorine extraction processing plant on a 640-acre site west of Hobbs, NM.

Using the company's fluorine extraction process, the facility will be designed to yield products for nuclear medicine, microelectronics, fiber-optic cable, and thin-film photovoltaic manufacturing. The plant also will be able to process depleted uranium tails from nuclear power plants.

Company president and CEO Steve Laflin said so far the project is on schedule, with the license review expected to take between 18 and 24 months. Plans are to employ a full-time staff of 130 to 150 people at the site.
