Exhibit examines reasons for missed breast ultrasound studies

Educational Exhibit | LL-BR4667 | Lakeside Learning Center
This educational exhibit will focus on the types of cases that can lead to missed cancers and misinterpreted lesions on breast ultrasound.

Although ultrasound has established itself as a valuable tool for breast imaging, the modality is still highly dependent on a number of variables, including the operator's skill level. Researchers from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City will discuss the different types of lesions that can stymie breast ultrasound, including:

  • Very small lesions
  • Heterogeneous echoic lesions
  • Lesions in a heterogeneous background
  • Use of improper compression
  • Difficulties with depth in women with large breasts
  • Incorrect localization between different imaging modalities

The researchers will demonstrate techniques for compensating for the above issues, according to Dr. Jeong Mi Park, director of the division of breast imaging and intervention at the university.
