RT enrollment stays same in 2011

The number of first-year students enrolled in radiologic technology programs in 2011 remains relatively steady compared to 2010, according to the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT).

Survey results found that an estimated 16,454 radiography students, 1,204 radiation therapy students, and 1,175 nuclear medicine technology students enrolled in educational programs this year.

The numbers translate into a 3.2% increase in enrollment for radiography programs, a 2.3% decrease for nuclear medicine technology programs, and a 1.8% decrease for radiation therapy programs compared to last year.

The report also noted that a total of 16,011 qualified students were turned away because program directors limited enrollment or programs were at full capacity. Fifty-four percent of radiography programs and 48% of radiation therapy programs reported full enrollment, according to the survey findings. However, only 18% of nuclear medicine technology programs were at full capacity.

In addition, approximately 81% of radiography students and 82% of radiation therapy students found employment in their respective disciplines within six months of graduating in 2010. However, only 58% of nuclear medicine technology students were able to get jobs, compared with 71% the previous year.
