Digirad buys mobile nuclear cardiology provider NIS

Nuclear medicine vendor Digirad said it has acquired Nuclear Imaging Systems (NIS), a mobile nuclear cardiology service based in Malvern, PA. Digirad plans to incorporate NIS' operations into Orion Imaging Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Digirad that provides cardiology services to more than 8,000 cardiology offices in the U.S.

NIS is the largest provider of mobile nuclear imaging systems in the U.S., and is a key expansion point in the northeastern U.S. for Digirad, the company said.

According to Digirad president Scott Huennekens, the deal enables Digirad to sell its portable 2020tc Imagers for use in NIS vans, and furthers San Diego-based Digirad's plans to provide nuclear cardiology services to physicians in their offices nationwide. NIS had been limited by vacuum-based technology in its vans, and will benefit from the installation of state-of-the-art Digirad gamma cameras, Huennekens said.
