MedSolutions report: RBMs could save Medicare $18 billion

By AuntMinnie.com staff writers

July 17, 2009 -- Radiology benefits management programs (RBMs) could save Medicare between $11.6 billion and $18 billion in diagnostic imaging costs over the next 10 years, according to a report by radiology benefits management firm MedSolutions of Nashville, TN.

The report suggests potential savings associated with RBMs are much greater than projected earlier this year in President Barack Obama's 2010 budget proposal. In that budget, a savings of $260 million was estimated over a 10-year period.

The MedSolutions report incorporates utilization data of commercial payors who used MedSolutions' RBM services to project potential Medicare savings. According to the analysis, the use of RBMs could reduce Medicare spending on advanced imaging services by an estimated $470 million to $720 million in the first year alone.

Currently, 90% of commercial insurers use an RBM program, according to MedSolutions.
