ASTRO restructures into 4 divisions

The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) announced that it has restructured itself into four divisions. The restructuring is the result of a year-long review of strategic priorities, according to Laura Thevenot, chief executive officer.

The newly created divisions of the Fairfax, VA, society are:

  1. Advocacy and clinical affairs, overseeing strategic efforts in health policy, research, government relations, and quality, headed by Emily Wilson
  2. Education, overseeing education and meetings, headed by Lynn Brown
  3. Finance and administration, headed by Terry Karras
  4. Member relations and communications, headed by Anna Arnone

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.
