A series of recent studies highlight the benefits of using technology in the hospital to address communication issues and improve patient care. A Philadelphia group found that scanning imaging requests directly into a RIS can dramatically reduce clinical history errors. A team from Boston used a confidential quality assurance (QA) reporting system to improve radiology performance, while another group found an automated e-mail alert system helped communicate nonemergent yet important clinical findings to referring physicians.
