NEC Electronics adds to LCD offerings

Monitor manufacturer NEC Electronics America has introduced two high-resolution thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) modules. The 20.1-inch, 5.24-megapixel displays are available in color and monochrome versions.

Featuring quad super-extended graphics array (SXGA) resolution of 2560 x 2048 pixels, the displays produce a 170° viewing angle range and a contrast ratio of over 10:1, according to the Santa Clara, CA-based firm.

NEC said that the monochrome TFT module is suitable for the needs of x-ray and other high-end medical displays, offering 766 shades of gray for each pixel, 850 cd/m&sub2; luminance, and a high contrast ratio of 600:1. Each pixel is composed of three separate subpixels, with each providing 256 shades of gray through 8-bit digital data input, according to NEC.

The firm showed its 20.1-inch display, as well as a work-in-progress, 21.3-inch 3-megapixel QXGA version, in private showings at the 2002 RSNA meeting in Chicago. Samples of the 20.1-inch LCDs are scheduled for availability in the first quarter of 2002 at $5,700 each. The 21.3-inch version is estimated to begin shipping in late 2003 at a list price of $3,000 each.
