Network data-communications security firm RedCreek Communications has launched a virtual private network (VPN) authentication tool for the U.S. healthcare industry. The product, 3VPN Authenticator, allows users to simultaneously connect to multiple authentication systems via the Internet, according to RedCreek. Typically, VPNs allow only one authentication to one provider during a session.
The Newark, CA-based company uses a Java applet to bind an individual user on its VPN to a specific desktop. This capability protects against unauthorized data access on the basis of predefined administrative policies. The product is compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) security and transaction provisions, according to Bill Lewis, RedCreek corporate sales manager. The standard has not yet been finalized.
The base price for the unit is $550, and it will support up to five users at a time. The product also includes 168-bit 3DES (data encryption standard) encryption capabilities.
