ACS: Risk of death from smoking spikes among women
Women's smoking habits have grown increasingly to resemble those of men, and as a result, today's women face a dramatically higher risk of death from lung cancer and chronic obstructive lung disease compared with female smokers 20 to 40 years ago, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Residency program directors (mostly) love their jobs, study finds
Job satisfaction runs fairly high among radiology residency program directors, but many complain about a lack of money, the intense workload, and the onerous requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, according to a study in the February American Journal of Roentgenology.

Take 2: Techs opt to repeat more head scans than radiologists
Maybe they're perfectionists: A new study from McGill University in Montreal found that radiologic technologists wanted to repeat far more head CT scans than radiologists, who seem more willing to put up with image noise and artifacts.

VC improves screening compliance at military facilities
The availability of virtual colonoscopy appeared to significantly increase the rate of colorectal cancer screening in a study of individuals ages 50 to 75 from U.S. military medical facilities. Results of the study were published in the January issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

Automated method makes CT dose estimates easier
Radiologists may soon be able to calculate the optimal radiation dose for CT scans through a new technique that automatically calculates patient diameter from CT images. The protocol could eliminate the need for body mass index calculations and manual measurements of patient size.

American Cancer Society recommends CT lung screening
Persuaded by an analysis of clinical studies demonstrating the benefits of lung cancer screening, the American Cancer Society on Friday published guidelines recommending CT screening for long-term current and former smokers. The new rules, however, hew closely to previous guidance that has been criticized as being overly cautious.

Screening is best reserved for those expected to live longer
Patients signing up for breast or colon cancer screening should have a minimum remaining life expectancy of at least 10 years to boost the chances of benefiting from the exams and overcoming their inherent risks, say researchers from the University of California, San Francisco in an article in BMJ.

Radiology fellows: How to land your 1st job
There's no denying today's brutal radiology job market, which can seem especially cruel for radiology fellows. But despite the dismal market, understanding the rules of the road can help beginning radiologists land a good job in an institution that supports their career goals.

Napkin-ring sign at CT shows vulnerable plaque
CT appears to have a useful way of demonstrating the noncalcified lipid-rich plaques that are at risk of rupturing -- at least the larger ones, according to researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Ultrasound nonmass breast lesion features may signal malignancy
By Amerigo Allegretto
Some nonmass breast lesion characteristics on ultrasound exams can be considered suspicious for malignancy at screening ultrasound.
November 5, 2024
Images depict a 43-year-old woman with a malignant nonmass lesion that was diagnosed as microinvasive ductal carcinoma. (A) Transverse and (B) longitudinal ultrasound images show a hypoechoic nonmass lesion (solid arrows) with segmental distribution in the left breast. The lesion has associated calcifications (dashed arrows in A). (C) Longitudinal color Doppler ultrasound image shows high vascularity. (D) Magnified image in the mediolateral oblique view from screening mammography shows grouped calcifications (arrows), which are considered a mammographic correlate of the ultrasound-detected nonmass lesion (A radiopaque marker attached to the skin is visible in the image because the mammographic exam was performed after screening breast ultrasound). Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy and pathologic examination revealed ductal carcinoma in situ, but the lesion was upgraded to microinvasive ductal carcinoma at subsequent surgery (2.5-cm ductal carcinoma in situ, histologic grade II, estrogen receptor-positive, progesterone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2-negative).
