Do positive NLST results persist in a poor, nonwhite, overweight urban population?
Sunday, November 30 | 10:45 a.m.-10:55 a.m. | SSA04-01 | Room S404CDA new study looked at lung cancer screening in a population that bears little resemblance to the relatively affluent cohort in the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST), which produced a minimum 20% mortality reduction from screening. Does the successful NLST model still hold true?

Road to RSNA 2014: CT Preview
Innovation remains at the heart of every advance in CT imaging, and at RSNA 2014 it shows up at every step in the imaging process, from acquisition to reconstruction to analysis. There are discussions of conebeam CT, high-efficiency direct conversion detectors, and new, more efficient detector materials. This year you'll also find presentations on spectral and multienergy imaging, which continue to break ground in new applications.

New studies highlight promises, risks of lung cancer screening
Clinicians need to learn more about the benefits of lung cancer screening with CT, biopsy their patients less, and not worry too much about the survival prospects of patients with minimally invasive adenocarcinomas, according to three studies presented on Thursday morning at the Multidisciplinary Symposium in Thoracic Oncology in Chicago.

CT hits the road in Houston with stroke ambulance project
Houston doctors have launched a CT-equipped mobile stroke unit to start clot-busting treatment sooner after 911 is called. The University of Texas team also hopes to learn whether patients have better long-term outcomes when they're treated sooner rather than later.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Could AI scoring help with managing DCIS?
Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.

CT reveals changes in lung holes in emphysema patients
By Will Morton
CT imaging of lung holes could offer a new way to visualize and quantify the natural course of emphysema.
July 15, 2025
Emphysema progression with hole changes, with holes colored according to their diameter in 2-mm increments. (A) Baseline inspiratory nonenhanced axial CT scans in a 48-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease show emphysema holes with hyperexpansion of secondary pulmonary lobules (white arrows) and thin alveolar walls visible in the right upper lobe. This emphysematous lesion is filled with holes of varying sizes. A single large air cyst was observed in the left upper lobe (black arrows), classified as a single emphysema hole of 20 mm or greater (bright green). (B) At six-year follow-up inspiratory nonenhanced axial CT, the holes in the right upper lobe have merged (white arrows), with no visible alveolar septa remaining, resulting in the formation of a large new hole of 20 mm or greater (bright green). Meanwhile, the hole in the left upper lobe also enlarged, merging with adjacent holes (black arrows). The size of other holes in the paramedian left upper lobe decreased.
