Animal study shows PET/CT can detect brain damage from TMT poisoning
A feasibility study in rats suggests that PET/CT can detect brain damage caused by trimethyltin chloride (TMT), a hazardous compound widely used in plastics production.
January 9, 2025
Micro-PET/CT images of rats. (a) At 24 hours in the control group, F-18 FDG uptake in rats brain tissue was normal, and the PET/CT images were red and white; (b) At 7 days in the control group, F-18 FDG uptake in rats brain tissue were normal, and the PET/CT images were red and white; (c) At 24 hours after TMT exposure, F-18 FDG uptake in rats brain tissue were in a low state, and the PET/CT images were orange and yellow. (d) 7 days after TMT exposure, F-18 FDG uptake in rats brain tissue further decreased, and the PET/CT images appeared yellow and light yellow. There was no significant difference in the uptake of muscle tissue between the model group and the control group, and the PET/CT image was blue. AI model detects achalasia on chest x-rays
By Will Morton
Currently, few noninvasive tests are available for diagnosing the swallowing condition.
September 18, 2025
Saliency maps using Grad-CAM++ (E and H) show the model’s point of interest in chest radiographs (C and F) of patients with achalasia. The model’s point of interest is highlighted with red, yellow, and green. In both the upper and lower panels (E and H), the point of interest is located in a region around the upper esophagus that corresponds to an air esophagogram and/or air-fluid level in the esophagus in the barium esophagogram (D and G).

Echogenic rind on breast ultrasound holds diagnostic significance
By Amerigo Allegretto
An echogenic rind on breast ultrasound could spell malignancy for suspicious lesions.
September 17, 2025
Diagnostic transverse ultrasound image of the left breast in a 64-year-old woman shows irregular hypoechoic nonparallel mass with indistinct margins corresponding to palpable finding, assessed as BI-RADS category 4. Both readers assessed mass as having associated echogenic rind with complete circumferential extent (arrowheads). Ultrasound-guided biopsy of mass yielded diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma (intermediate grade, luminal A molecular subtype, no lymphovascular invasion).
