Breast elastography gets high sensitivity marks in 7-year study
By
Brian Casey
Wednesday, December 2 | 10:40 a.m.-10:50 p.m. | SSK02-02 | Room E450AA seven-year U.K. study of ultrasound breast elastography indicates that the technique has good sensitivity for differentiating between malignant and benign tissue, and it improves diagnostic confidence in nearly half of cases, according to this Wednesday morning scientific session presentation.

Contrast ultrasound spots inflammation in carotid atherosclerotic plaque
By
Brian Casey
Wednesday, December 2 | 9:00 a.m.-9:10 a.m. | VI41-02 | Room E352Recent research has determined that inflamed plaque is at the highest risk for rupture and causing stroke. Could ultrasound of the carotid artery be used as a tool to detect which patients have inflamed plaque, enabling therapeutic intervention?

BI-RADS-based software improves breast ultrasound reporting
By
Brian Casey
Tuesday, December 1 | 3:40 p.m.-3:50 p.m. | SSJ11-05 | Room S102DThe use of a commercial software application that supports the American College of Radiology's BI-RADS lexicon for breast ultrasound can help radiologists produce reports that are more consistent and accurate, with quicker report turnaround times, according to a paper to be presented by Canadian researchers.

Contrast ultrasound makes for less invasive sentinel node staging
By
Brian Casey
Tuesday, December 1 | 3:10 p.m.-3:20 p.m. | SSJ02-02 | Room E450AIn this scientific session presentation, U.K. researchers will present research indicating that contrast-enhanced ultrasound could offer a less invasive alternative to current techniques for determining if breast cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.

US + CT = best model for screening for hepatocellular carcinoma
By
Brian Casey
Tuesday, December 1 | 10:50 a.m.-11:00 a.m. | SSG09-03 | Room S102DIn this Tuesday morning presentation, researchers from the University of California, San Diego will discuss their research comparing four different imaging protocols for screening patients with liver cirrhosis for signs of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Software application analyzes contrast ultrasound liver images
By
Brian Casey
Tuesday, December 1 | 10:40 a.m.-10:50 a.m. | SSG06-02 | Room E353CAs ultrasound contrast becomes more widely used (at least outside the U.S.), software is becoming available to analyze contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) images. In this Tuesday morning scientific session presentation, Swiss researchers will discuss their use of a commercially available software application for analyzing CEUS images of focal liver lesions.

Korean facility sets up program to audit breast screening outcomes
By
Brian Casey
Tuesday, December 1 | 10:20 a.m.-10:30 a.m. | VB31-08 | Arie Crown TheaterBreast ultrasound has become a useful tool as an adjunct to screening mammography, but how well would the modality stand on its own as a screening exam? In this presentation, Korean researchers will address this question as it pertains to patient populations who might not be suited to regular mammography screening.

Lymphonography could replace lymphoscintigraphy for melanoma
By
Brian Casey
Monday, November 30 | 3:50 p.m.-4:00 p.m. | SSE13-06 | Room S504CDIn this scientific session presentation, Dr. Barry Goldberg from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia will discuss whether contrast-enhanced ultrasound can replace lymphoscintigraphy in determining whether melanoma has spread to the lymph nodes.

Practice optimization helps reduce ultrasound report turnaround time
By
Brian Casey
Monday, November 30 | 3:30 p.m.-3:40 p.m. | SSE12-04 | Room S102DReport turnaround time (TAT) has become one of the most important metrics for assessing the quality of a radiology group or facility. In this Monday presentation, researchers from Mount Sinai Medical Center will describe how they implemented a program that reduced TAT for ultrasound studies by 25%.

MRI volume navigation adds accuracy to second-look breast ultrasound
By
Brian Casey
Sunday, November 29 | 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. | LL-BR4062-B07 | Lakeside Learning CenterSecond-look ultrasound has become a useful technique for gaining additional information on lesions first identified on breast MRI scans. In this Sunday afternoon presentation, Italian researchers go a step further by adding a magnetic-based volume navigation system that enables the fusion of breast ultrasound and MRI scans.

Ultrasound elastography falls short in reducing breast biopsies
By
Brian Casey
Sunday, November 29 | 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m. | LL-BR4058-B03 | Lakeside Learning CenterUltrasound elastography is a promising technique for a number of applications, one of which could be reducing the number of unnecessary breast biopsies by enabling clinicians to characterize suspicious tissue. However, Korean researchers on Sunday will discuss how they found that elastography fell short for this application.
