Mammography still offers advantages over breast MR in DCIS

In its new guideline for breast MR, the American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends against routine use of the modality in women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). The results of a recent study jibe with the ACS' assessment: The Italian authors said that MRI could not be used as a diagnostic tool for evaluating microcalcifications, but that it did have other uses in DCIS. On the same subject, Dr. Philippe Sebag from the Centre de Senologie in Nice, France, outlined why mammography is the gold standard test for DCIS.

NEJM study pans CAD, draws attention and criticism

Computer-aided detection (CAD) technology has long shown promise, both scientifically and anecdotally, for increasing breast cancer detection. Given that experience, the mammography community is sure to be rocked by a large study published in today's New England Journal of Medicine that found CAD to actually have a negative effect on screening mammogram interpretation.

Breast imaging expert: ACP mammo screening policy teeming with misinformation
The American College of Physicians (ACP) released new guidelines this week suggesting that women ages 40-49 may not benefit from annual mammography screening. While the ACP claims to be champions of informed decision-making, they continue to ignore the facts and mislead women, according to Dr. Daniel Kopans, who explains why he considers the ACP's recommendation that screening be based on an individual's risk level to be unsupportable.
