Ultrasound misuse in India: another viewpoint
The misuse of ultrasound in India for sex determination has prompted a debate in the radiological community about whether performing ultrasound should be restricted to radiologists and gynaecologists. After AuntMinnieIndia published an article on the IRIA's stand, we've received several responses questioning the association's stance, so we're publishing a response that best sums up why ultrasound should not be exclusive to radiologists and gynaecologists.

Ultrasound is an ugly word in India because of the immediate connection it provokes with female foeticide. And sadly so, because there’s a lot more to ultrasound than pre-natal sex determination. The Indian Radiological and Imaging Association is taking up the issue of ultrasound practice once again with the Central Supervisory Board to remove the stigma and restrict ultrasound practice only to doctors who have specialised in the modality.
