Prototype MR unit offers fine spatial, temporal resolution -- sans magnet
By
Shalmali Pal
Inexpensive, compact, and mobile are three words that are rarely associated with MRI. But researchers in California have designed an experimental MR system that uses optical atomic magnetometry instead of a superconducting magnet and cryogenics, which could one day lead to a new breed of portable MR units, as well as the ability to image in the presence of metal implants.

Breast MRI takes on CT in hepatic lesions and intraductal carcinoma
By
Shalmali Pal
Two new studies have examined the role of MRI and CT in breast cancer and subsequent metastatic disease. Radiologists in New York City sought to find out whether MRI should be used to differentiate benign and malignant lesions in patients with indeterminate CT findings. And Japanese researchers pitted MRI against multidetector-row CT (MDCT) for determining the lesion margins for surgical removal. They found that one modality was superior to the other.

Study pits CT against MRI for virtual colonoscopy
By
Eric Barnes
MR colonography offers the promise of radiation-free colorectal exams, excellent soft-tissue contrast, and contrast agents with a better safety profile. But in a polyp-to-polyp face-off in a phantom study, researchers in Germany found that CT colonography (or virtual colonoscopy) still had a sensitivity edge, especially at normal dose levels.

MR arthrography typifies cam and pincer FAI for intracapsular hip surgery
By
Shalmali Pal
Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is one of the causes of premature osteoarthritis in the hip, and occurs when there is a conflict between the proximal femur and the acetabular rim. MR arthrography is particularly useful for the presurgical assessment of existing damage within the joint, according to radiologists and orthopedists in Switzerland.

MDCT complements MR in heart disease evaluation
By
Wayne Forrest
As multidetector-row CT (MDCT) becomes more prevalent in cardiac imaging applications, its primary benefit may be as a complementary modality to MR, providing additional information and patient coverage that MR cannot.

MRI, US take on diagnostic challenge of PAI in soccer players
By
Shalmali Pal
For soccer players, the ankle is subjected to chronic forces while jumping, running, and kicking. As a result, chronic ankle pain is a common problem. Clinical exams and imaging (x-ray or CT) may or may not tell the whole story in posterior ankle impingement (PAI), which can be serious enough to keep a player off the pitch. Recent studies from Canada and the U.K. have outlined the MR imaging abnormalities that are seen in PAI, as well as the role of ultrasound for guiding therapeutic injections.
