Part II: Choosing between MR and US in musculoskeletal imaging
By
Erik L. Ridley
In Part I of this article, Dr. Levon Nazarian, a professor and vice chairman of education at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) Hospital in Philadelphia, focused on picking the right modality for imaging the upper extremities. The second part of his talk highlights exams of the hip, knee, ankle, and foot. As with the upper body, the choice of modality for musculoskeletal imaging should be undertaken with care.

Technology broadens scope of cardiac MR
By
Eric Barnes
From perfusion imaging to infarct detection and guided intervention, cardiac MRI (CMRI) is gaining utility and fans in the academic world and beyond. The options are poised to expand rapidly in the coming years thanks to better coil designs, higher field strengths in scanners, and specialized contrast agents, to name a few of the forces shaping CMR's future.

Part I: Choosing between MR and US in musculoskeletal imaging
By
Erik L. Ridley
In musculoskeletal imaging, the modality of choice isnโt always readily apparent. To help, Dr. Levon Nazarian, a professor and vice chairman of education at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) Hospital in Philadelphia, led an analysis of the existing literature and presented the findings at the 2006 Leading Edge in Diagnostic Ultrasound conference in Atlantic City.

US, MR spot life-threatening abdominal pregnancy before it's too late
By
Shalmali Pal
Intra-abdominal pregnancy is rare, but when it does occur, pinpointing it can be a complex process. Two case reports offer details on the role of imaging in making this difficult diagnosis. First, clinicians in Thailand describe a case of a uterocutaneous fistula that occurred after the placenta was left in a term abdominal pregnancy. In the second, clinicians in India report how MRI and ultrasound helped them diagnose an extrauterine pregnancy in a woman with a history of gynecological problems.

From tears to TKA: The ins and outs of knee MRI
By
Shalmali Pal
Whether it's an injury of the MCL, POL, or PCL, MRI can be the go-to modality for knee imaging. Dr. Douglas Beall from Oklahoma City offered his tips on getting the most out this modality at the 2006 International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine meeting in Seattle. Beall covered old school topics (injury grading) as well as newer ones (postarthroplasty complications) in knee MRI.

Better enhancement, fewer artifacts seen with certain -- but not all -- MR contrast agents
By
Shalmali Pal
Two new studies evaluated three different MR contrast agents for brain and spinal imaging. In the first study, a multi-institutional group compared two gadolinium-based contrast agents for the enhancement of central nervous system (CNS) lesions. In the second, researchers tested a half-life gadolinium-based contrast agent in functional MRI (fMRI).

MRI safety in Canada
While legal standards for MRI safety may still be in their formative stages in Canada, they are currently far ahead of those in the U.S., according to MRI architectural consultant Tobias Gilk. Canadians may be poised to leapfrog their neighbors to the south in MRI safety by making safety provisions a requirement for MRI providers.
