Dear MRI Insider,

Merging traditional MRI with MR spectroscopy (MRS) can help breast health experts obtain information about the chemical content of breast lesions. This information can then be used in various ways, from improving diagnosis to monitoring response to cancer therapies.

"Initial MRS studies of breast cancer show promising results, and a growing number of research groups are incorporating the technique into their breast MRI protocols," according to a recent paper in Breast Cancer Research (May 12, 2005, Vol. 7:4, pp. 149-152).

One of those groups presented the results of their breast MRS/MRI research at the 2005 RSNA meeting in Chicago. Dr. Alfonso Fausto and colleagues from Milan, Italy, found that MRS can be routinely and successfully performed after MRI. To read more about their results, click here.
