Global initiative to guide NMTs in theranostics

Four organizations have launched a global effort to help guide nuclear medicine technologists (NMTs) in the field of theranostics.

The initiative is called the Nuclear Medicine Technologists in Theranostics International Consortium, and it unites the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Technologist Section, the European Association of Nuclear Medicine Technologist Committee, the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine Theranostics Special Interest Group, and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

“As programs expand, the responsibilities of NMTs are evolving rapidly,” the SNMMI said in a news release.

While professional bodies consistently emphasize multidisciplinary teamwork, safety, and education in theranostics, the training expectations, scope, and responsibilities of NMTs vary widely by country and institution, the SNMMI said.

The initiative aims to define the evolving role of NMTs in theranostics and clinical trials, identify regional enablers and barriers to high-quality care, propose harmonized competencies and education pathways, and elevate recognition of NMTs as integral members of the theranostics team.
